Do’s and Dont’s for the Interview

The job interview can be a very stressful event if you are not prepared. The intense scrutiny by one or a team of recruiters may lead to nervousness which manifests in unwelcome behaviours that could jeopardize your chances at landing the job. Here are a few tips you can use to improve your performance at the job interview.

Do your research.

Read up on the company before the interview to learn more about what they do and the industry in general. Displaying knowledge of the company will give you an advantage especially if you are asked to explain how you can contribute to the success of the business.

Do dress appropriately.

Even organisations that encourage a relaxed workplace expect the candidate to dress professionally for the interview. Bear in mind that professionally does not necessary mean wearing a business suit or tailored attire to be interviewed by someone dressed in a casual shirt. This is one reason why preliminary research is important.

Do mind your manners.

Being polite and respectful is always appreciated. Watch your body language to ensure that you are not giving negative signals and speak in a calm tone. If you are unfortunate enough to encounter a rude interviewer, maintain your composure and do not allow this interaction to rattle your emotions.

Don’t act arrogant.

Being confident about your abilities is not the same as being arrogant. Even though you may be proud of your accomplishments, being boastful may give the interviewer the wrong impression. Humility is a much admired trait in interviews and can make you seem more likeable.

Don’t be sloppy.

Slouching in the chair or just throwing out answers without careful though are activities that can be viewed as a sign of boredom. The interviewer may feel that you are not really interested in the job or is simply someone who does not pay attention to detail.

Don’t dominate the interview.

Although you are excited about the prospect of getting a job, show respect for the boundaries and remember that you are the one being interviewed. This is no time to be overly talkative, and interrupting the interviewer unnecessarily. Limit your expressions to the information you are asked for, and asking relevant questions that demonstrate your awareness of the business and the demands of the position.
